From Middle English and Old French violent, from Latin violentus, from vīs 'strength'.

Force that comes out too hard and too fast to be held back. In its plainest use that force is aimed at a person's body; but the same word is used whenever anything breaks out with more force than it can contain — a temper, an argument, a storm, a headache, even a colour that hits the eye too hard.

可以想成：一股收不住的力道，來得又急又猛。最字面的用法是這股力道朝著人的身體去；但只要有東西「爆出來、壓不住」，英文都可以用這個字——脾氣、爭執、暴風雨、頭痛，甚至一個亮到刺眼的顏色。所以看到 violent 不要自動翻成「暴力」，要先看它形容的是人、是感受，還是自然現象。
