You can picture violence as 'raw, hurting force breaking out' — power that doesn't hold back and ends up damaging whatever it hits. The clearest case is people hurting people (hitting, fighting); from that same picture come the force of a storm, the harm done to something good, and the fierce heat of angry words or feelings.
