From Latin brūtus 'heavy, dull, unfeeling', via Medieval Latin brutalis 'of a beast'.
brutal 來自拉丁文 brūtus（笨重、遲鈍、沒有感覺），中世紀拉丁文 brutalis 意思是「屬於野獸的」。這條線很直接地解釋了現代的核心：brutal 形容的不是聰明的惡意，而是那種「沒有感覺、所以不會收手」的遲鈍力量——跟 brute（野獸、蠻力）是同一個根。
