looking very serious · adjective · C2
Looking or sounding very serious, often with a tight face or voice, because something is hard or worrying.
凝重
A face set hard and — jaw tight, no give in it — the look someone wears when things are bad and they are not going to it.
Old English grimm meant fierce, savage, angry — from a Proto-Indo-European root *gher-/*ghrem- for a rumbling, growling, thunderous noise. The word starts as a growl and cools over centuries into the tight-faced, unsmiling hardness it names today.
Wiktionary, "grim" (English adjective): Middle English grim < Old English grimm < Proto-Germanic *grimmaz < PIE *gʰrem- ("to resound, thunder, grumble, roar")
