Solemn describes something very serious and formal — no smiling, no joking around. You might see a solemn face at a funeral, hear a solemn promise (one you make very seriously and mean to keep), or take part in a solemn ceremony. It is not the same as 'sad' — a solemn moment is serious and important, even if nobody is crying.
