Promising means showing signs of being successful or good in the future. A promising student, a promising start, promising test results. It comes from promise, but here nobody is making a vow: the person or the situation itself seems to “promise” a good later. It is a hopeful word, and also a careful one. Though actually, promising is not the same as already good. A promising career can still fail, and a promising first chapter does not guarantee a good book. Teachers like it because it praises the direction without pretending the work is finished.
