You can picture 'block' as a solid, heavy lump with flat sides — a chunk of wood or stone that just sits there, dense and immovable. Two big ideas grow from that lump: (1) a solid mass/chunk of stuff (a city block, a building, a batch dealt with as one), and (2) what such a lump DOES when it sits in your way — it stops things (the verb 'to block').
