源自中古英文 bildynge，等於 build 加上字尾 -ing。

Something that has been built — walls and a roof put up and fixed to the ground. The word names both the finished thing standing there (a house, a school, a factory) and the very act of putting it up. Picture bricks being laid course by course: the action of 'building' and the object 'a building' are two snapshots of the same scene.

可以想成「被蓋起來的東西」：牆和屋頂立起來、固定在地上。這個字一邊指那個蓋好、站在那裡的東西（房子、學校、工廠），一邊指把它蓋起來這個動作本身。可以想像磚一層一層往上疊的畫面——「building 這個動作」和「a building 這個物件」其實是同一幕的兩個鏡頭：先有人在蓋，蓋完就成了一棟建築物。
