An obstacle is anything that stands in your way and makes it harder to get somewhere or achieve something. It can be physical — a fallen tree blocking a road — or it can be a problem in life, like money, fear, or a lack of time standing between you and a goal. 'Obstacle course' is a common phrase for a physical course full of things to climb over, crawl under, and jump across, often used to build the figurative meaning too.
