    To hinder someone or something is to make it harder for them to move, grow, or succeed. You get in the way and slow things down. It is a little more formal than “get in the way” or “slow down,” and you meet it in news, school writing, and serious talk: bad weather hindered the rescue; old rules can hinder change. It does not usually mean you stop something dead — that is closer to prevent or block. The noun is a hindrance (the thing that hinders), not “a hinder.” Older English also has hinder as an adjective meaning “at the back,” as in an animal’s hinder legs, from the same old “back” idea; students almost never need that sense in everyday talk.

組成From Middle English hindren, from Old English hindrian, from Proto-Germanic *hindrōną / *hinderōną (“to hinder”), from the adverb *hinder (“back”). The old picture is holding something back. Related in sister languages to Dutch hinderen and German hindern.
