To unblock something is to take out whatever is stuck inside it, so things can move through again. The everyday use is about , drains, sinks, toilets, noses — anything that is a tube with something caught in it. You unblock a drain with a wire or a chemical; a hot drink can unblock your nose. Note the shape of the idea: the thing you unblock is the PIPE, not the stuff you pull out. You unblock the sink; you do not unblock the hair. Beyond , the word has spread in two directions. Same idea underneath — something was in the way, now it is not. It is a plain, ordinary word, not formal at all, and it works as a normal verb: unblock, unblocks, unblocked, unblocking. People also say 'get it unblocked' when someone else does the work for them.
組成un- + block. Here un- is the 'undo it' un-, not the 'not' un-: it reverses an action that already happened, the way untie undoes tying and unlock undoes locking. So unblock = undo the blocking. Block itself is the ordinary word for a lump of something solid — a block of wood — and a lump of something solid sitting in a pipe is exactly what stops it.
