An interception is the act of stopping something on its way, before it gets there. It is the noun that sits beside the verb intercept. In American football this word is famous: you catch a pass that was meant for the other team, and the crowd goes wild. News also uses it for police or army actions — stopping a ship, a message, a weapon in the air. Same idea, different worlds. Though actually, outside sport it still sounds a bit official; friends might just say “they caught it” or “they stopped it.”
