Picture something heavy that would sag, slip, or topple, and a hand, a post, or a pair of arms placed under it so it stays up and in place. That is the root picture of 'support': you put your strength under something so it does not fall. From that one physical act everything grows — holding up a person's spirits, holding up a family with money, holding up an idea with facts, holding up a team with your loyalty. Whatever the object, support means: I am under it, taking its weight, keeping it from going down.
