You can think of 'aid' as one simple idea worn two ways: help — something extra that you bring in to make a hard task easier or to carry someone who is struggling. As a noun it is the help itself (or the thing/money/person that gives it); as a verb it is the act of giving that help. Whether it's an aid (a tool), aid (relief money), or to aid (to assist), the centre is always: lend support so the thing gets done.
