The ground is under everything, and this word says that something is down on it, held there. Wheels resting on the runway instead of lifting off. A hull sitting on sand instead of floating free. A wire running down into the earth. A pair of feet planted flat while everything else moves. Every use is a version of the same moment: contact with the ground, and something that would otherwise rise, drift or fly is kept where it is.

The evidence gives grounded as Middle English grounded, that is ground plus the ending -ed, so the form itself says 'put to the ground'.
