A down-to-earth person is practical, straight, and honest, with both feet on the ground and no show. They give useful answers, not fancy talk, and they do not act grand. You can also call a plan or an idea down-to-earth if it is realistic and . Though actually, it is almost always a compliment: it means you can trust them to be sensible, not that they are dull or poorly educated. Teachers, nurses, and good managers get called this with warmth. It is common, friendly English, used about people far more than about objects.
