Picture the moment the wheels stop touching the ground. Nothing is holding the thing up from below any more — the air is. That is the whole word: off the ground, and up there because of the air. Every use only changes what is up there and how it got there: a plane under its own power, a of dust that the wind lifted, soldiers a plane carried, a camera bolted under a wing.

The supplied source records airborne from around the 1640s, formed from air plus the ending -borne. The two parts together can be read as carried by the air, which is still what the word says today.
