If something is banned, the people in charge have said you must not do it, use it, sell it, or (for a group) meet. A banned book cannot be sold or taught in that place. A person can be banned from a club, a game, or a country — they may not go there. Banned is the -ed form of the verb ban, and it also sits in front of a noun like an adjective: banned substances, a banned film. It is a strong, official-sounding word. A parent saying no snacks before dinner is not this kind of rule in the strict sense — though actually families do say “Mum banned phones at the table,” stretching it to a house rule. Either way, it means not allowed.

From Middle English bannen, partly from Old English bannan 'to summon, proclaim' and partly from Old Norse banna 'to prohibit, curse'.
