You can think of unrecognized as a face moving through a crowd that nobody picks out. To recognize something is to see it and say what it is; put un- in front and that moment never happens. The thing is fully there, and still no finger points at it. The packet's source entry gives the word as un- + recognized, with un- traced back through Middle and Old English. So this is not a separate word but recognized turned over: every kind of noticing that recognized can carry, unrecognized carries the missing version of.
