From Old French official, from Latin officiālis, from officium 'duty, service'.

Coming from the office in charge, with the stamp of authority on it. Picture a thing that has been approved and sealed by the people who hold power: it is the real, recognized version, not just someone's private say-so. The person who works inside that office is an 'official'.
