You can picture forgotten as the shape a thing takes after it has slipped out of somebody's mind: the fact, the name, the is still out there in the world, but the person who once held it no longer reaches it. The word points at that gap — first as the finished form of forget (have forgotten), then as a label you can put in front of a noun for anything sitting in that gap.
