Picture the small click in your head when a face in the crowd stops being a stranger: you have seen this before, and now you know it again. Something outside you matches something already stored inside you, and the match is what the word names. One way to hold the whole word is that click of knowing again - sometimes it lands on a face, sometimes on a fact, sometimes on what someone did for you.
