Unofficial describes something that isn't approved, confirmed, or done through the proper, formal process — even though it might still be true or widely accepted in practice. "Unofficial results" of an election are numbers reported before the final, formal count is done. An "unofficial rule" at a workplace is something everyone follows even though it was never actually written down or approved by management.
