roar, verb, loud deep sound · verb · C2
To send out a very loud, deep sound, like a lion calling or a big engine running.
A huge, deep, rolling sound pouring out of something powerful — a lion, an engine, a storm — big enough to fill the whole space and be felt as well as heard.
From Middle English roren, from Old English rārian "to roar, wail, lament", from Proto-Germanic *rairōną "to bellow, roar", ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *rey- "to shout, bellow". The word has meant "make a huge bellowing noise" for its entire recorded history — the root is essentially an imitation of the sound itself.
