From Middle English roren, from Old English rārian "to roar, wail, lament", from Proto-Germanic *rairōną "to bellow, roar", ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *rey- "to shout, bellow". The word has meant "make a huge bellowing noise" for its entire recorded history — the root is essentially an imitation of the sound itself.

從古英語 rārian（吼叫、哀號）一路傳下來，再往上追到原始日耳曼語 *rairōną（吼、咆哮）與原始印歐語 *rey-（喊叫、吼）。有意思的是這個字從有紀錄以來意思幾乎沒變過——它本身就是模仿那個聲音造出來的字，所以現代英語裡它依然這麼「聲音本位」：先是聲音，其他意思才從聲音延伸出去。
