One way to hold thunder is as a sound with weight: the long, low crash that rolls across the sky after lightning. It is not a sharp click but a deep rumble you feel in your chest and in the window glass. Everything else the word does grows out of that one noise — anything heavy enough to shake the air can 'thunder', and a voice or a face heavy with anger borrows the same picture.
