核心畫面

Rays leaving a source and landing on something. Picture a lamp in a dark room: the light goes out from one point, travels, and settles on whatever is in front of it, and that thing is changed — it is now bright all over. Every use of irradiate keeps that shape. Only three things vary: what the rays are made of, which end of the journey you are watching, and whether the target is a wall, a face, a , a bag of , or a person's mind.

From the word’s history

Wiktionary traces the word to Medieval Latin irradiatus, from ir- (on, upon) plus radiare, from radius, a ray of light or the spoke of a wheel. The spoke is worth keeping in mind: lines going out from one centre. It also notes that the adjective is older in English than the verb.

來源資料把這個字追到中世紀拉丁文 irradiātus:ir-(朝上、打在上面)加上 radiō,而 radiō 來自 radius——一道光線,也是車輪的輻條。輻條這個意思值得記住:一堆線從同一個中心往外射。這正是這個字今天所有用法的骨架。資料也提到,英文裡形容詞 irradiate 出現得比動詞還早。

Three branches

看不見的射線打進去

同一個「射線打上去」的畫面,只是射線換成看不見的 X 光或伽馬射線,而且目的不是照亮,是穿透和處理。

verb · C1

To pass X-rays or other radiation through a person, an animal or an object — for example to make a medical image, to treat a tumour, or to test or sterilise a material.

照射(放射線)

光打上去,整個亮起來

核心畫面的字面版本:射線就是真正的光。差別只在你看的是被照亮的那一端,還是發光的那一端。

verb · C2

To make something look bright, as though a light were shining onto it. It is a literary use, said of a face, a room, a sky or a landscape, and the brightness can come from real light or from a strong feeling.

照亮;使發亮

像光一樣進到心裡、或散出去

把光換成看不見的特質,形狀完全沒變:一樣從一點出發、一樣落在目標上。這是概念上的比喻,不是另一條歷史來源。

verb · C2

To fill a person, a mind or a spirit with understanding or new life, as though light had been let into a dark place.

使開竅;使振作
