Wiktionary traces the word to Medieval Latin irradiatus, from ir- (on, upon) plus radiare, from radius, a ray of light or the spoke of a wheel. The spoke is worth keeping in mind: lines going out from one centre. It also notes that the adjective is older in English than the verb.
