    To make water, food, air, or a place dirty and unsafe by letting something harmful such as chemicals, waste, or get into it.

    「contaminate」講的是有害的東西進到乾淨的東西裡面，讓它不能再喝、再吃、再用。它跟 pollute 很接近，差別在範圍和方式：pollute 多半講大範圍、長時間的環境破壞（工廠排放污染整條河）；contaminate 常是某一批東西或某一個地方被弄到，而且往往是意外。看到 contaminate，重點在「本來安全，現在不安全了」。

    To have a bad effect on something good, such as an idea, a group, or a place, so that it is spoiled.

    這一層把「有害的東西混進來」搬到看不見的東西上：一個想法、一場比賽、一個地方的氣氛，被某樣東西弄壞了。用 contaminate 而不用 spoil，語氣重得多，因為它借了污染那個畫面——壞掉的部分會擴散，而且不容易清乾淨。它多半出現在評論和新聞裡，帶著批評的口氣。
