To brighten means to become brighter, or to make something brighter, and this works both for light and color, as in 'the sky brightened after the storm passed,' and for mood, as in 'her face brightened when she saw her old friend,' meaning she suddenly looked happier. You can also 'brighten someone's day,' meaning to do something small and kind that makes their day happier.
