Picture two shapes with a clean line between them — no blur, no overlap, no 'is that one thing or two?'. The edge is sharp enough that you can point at each one separately. Sometimes the sharp edge separates two things from each other; sometimes it separates a thing from its background, so you can see or hear it clearly. Either way, the picture is an outline that does not smudge.
