Picture two things held up side by side and the eye finding no real difference — two brothers, two answers, two towns. Alike always needs a pair (or a group) and always looks across the gap between them. Sometimes it says they resemble each other; sometimes it says whatever we just said applies to both, with nothing left over for one side.
