Dissimilar means not the same — two things that do not match in look, size, kind, or character. It is a quieter, more careful word than different. People reach for it when they are comparing: the two plans are dissimilar; her style is dissimilar to her ’s. It sounds a little formal and a little . In everyday talk, most people just say different or not alike. It does not mean “strange” or “wrong”; it only says the two things do not line up. You can be dissimilar without being opposites — a cat and a dog are dissimilar, but they are both pets.
