An indistinct sound, picture, or memory cannot be seen, heard, or remembered clearly. You can tell something is there, but the edges are fuzzy — the words will not come through, the face will not get sharp, the scene in your head stays dim. It is a calm, slightly careful word. In everyday talk, people also say “unclear,” “fuzzy,” or “I couldn’t quite make it out.” Though actually, indistinct is not the same as silent or invisible: the thing is there, just not sharp. A voice on a bad phone line, a shape in fog, a childhood memory — those are its usual homes.
