Catch can be pictured as one decisive moment: something is moving — a flying ball, a running person, a sound in the air, a falling drop, a passing moment — and you reach out and close your hand on it before it gets away. That single image of 'a moving thing meeting your closing grip' fans out in several directions: you grip what comes at you (a ball, a thief, an illness); you reach a moving thing in time (a train, a film before it ends); a moving part snags and gets stuck; and your senses 'grab' what passes by — a glimpse, a faint sound, a likeness. As a noun it freezes that act: the catch you made, the catch of fish you took, or the hidden snag that 'catches' you.
