Picture yourself seeing something coming — a person you don't want to meet, a on the path, a mistake about to happen — and deliberately steering around it so it never reaches you. The core of avoid is this 'keep myself clear of it' move: you act ahead of time so the unwanted thing doesn't touch you, happen to you, or get done by you.

prevent · verb · B1

To stop something bad from happening, or to keep it from happening.

refrain from doing · verb · B1

To choose on purpose not to do something, especially something wrong or harmful.

Also in this word

stay away from · verb · B1

To stay away from a person, place, or thing, or to not use something.
