You can hold shut as moving something into its closed position so nothing can pass: a door swung till it meets the frame, a lid pressed down, a gap sealed. The opening that was there is now gone. Whether it's a door, a shop, your eyes, or your mouth, the same picture runs underneath — bring the two edges together and close the gap.

shut (close) · verb · A2

To move something so that it is no longer open, or to become closed.

shut (shop stops opening) · verb · A2

If a shop or place shuts, it stops being open to people for a while or for good.

shut (rude: stop talking) · verb · A2

Used in a rough way to tell someone to stop talking.
