You can picture trap as a device that catches and holds, so what is inside cannot get out. The plainest image is the animal trap: something walks in, the trap shuts, and there is no way back. Almost every other meaning is that same shape — a clever scheme that catches a person, a situation you cannot escape, heat sealed in with nowhere to go.
