Picture catching someone's eye across a room and giving a small nod. Nothing has been agreed and nothing has been praised — you have simply let them know that you see them. Every other use is that nod pointed at something else: at a fact you would rather not see, at someone's ability, at their authority, at help they gave you, or at a parcel that arrived.
