核心畫面

Picture one round body that keeps turning over as it travels. That turning is the whole word. A wall gets painted because the round body rolls up it; a lawn gets pressed flat because the round body rolls over it; a heavy boat moves because round logs turn under it; hair holds a curl because it is wrapped round a small tube; a wave arrives because a long wall of water has rolled all the way in from the open sea. Change the size, and change what it touches, and you have almost every meaning of roller.

From the word’s history

Wiktionary records roller as Middle English rollere, that is roll plus -er: the thing (or person) that rolls. The modern uses all sit directly on that literal build.

根據 Wiktionary,roller 來自中古英語 rollere,也就是 roll(滾)加上 -er(做這件事的東西或人),字面就是「會滾的那個」。今天所有的用法都還貼著這個最字面的組合走,沒有走遠。

Wiktionary entry 'roller' (packet source_ref kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:1014155456): "From Middle English rollere, equivalent to roll + -er."

滾過表面、把表面改變的圓筒

這一族最貼近核心畫面:圓筒自己滾過去,它經過的地方就變了。

noun · B1

A tube-shaped tool or machine part that turns over and over as it moves along a surface, used for spreading paint, pressing earth or grass flat, or making something smooth.

滾筒

墊在底下滾、讓東西前進的圓筒

同樣是會轉的圓筒,只是這次它不改變表面,而是墊在底下,把「滾」借給壓在它上面的東西。

noun · B2

One of several tube-shaped pieces of wood or metal that you put under something heavy that has no wheels, so it can be pushed along as they turn. Usually used in the plural.

滾木/滾軸

讓東西繞上去的圓筒

還是那根圓筒,但方向反過來:這次不是它滾過別人,而是別人繞著它捲上去。

noun · B1

A small plastic or metal tube that you wind a piece of hair around and leave in place, so that the hair dries or sets in a curl.

髮捲

從遠處一路滾過來的大浪

這一族把「會滾的圓東西」放大成一整道水:它不是工具,可是它做的事還是滾,而且滾了很遠。

noun · B2

A long, wide, powerful wave that travels in from far out at sea and curls over as it reaches the shore.

長浪/巨浪

做「滾、捲」這個動作的人

英文的 -er 同時能指東西和人,所以同一個字也可以指做這個動作的工人。這是字尾的另一條出口,不是另一個畫面。

noun · C1

A person whose work is rolling something — for example someone who rolls cigars by hand, or someone who works the rolling machines in a metal works.

捲製工/軋輥工
