A craftsman is someone very skilled at a particular craft — work done with the hands and with long practice: wood, metal, clay, cloth, stone. The word praises the person, not a trick. You picture care, patience, and a trade learned over years. It is still common, a little traditional in feel, and you meet it on workshop signs, in museums, and when people talk about “real craftsman’s work,” meaning the details were not rushed. Though actually, this word kept the older, kinder meaning of craft as skill, while walked off toward “sneaky.” Same family, different personalities. The middle -s- is just a joining sound, the way you also hear it in sportsman or tradesman; it is not a plural “many crafts.” Some people now say craftsperson so the word clearly includes everyone; craftsman is still the form you will hear most. The usual plural is craftsmen.
組成craft + -s- + -man. Craft is the skill or trade; -man means the person; the -s- in the middle is a linking piece, not “more than one craft.”
