A curler is a small plastic or metal tube that you roll a lock of hair around so the hair sets in a curl. People also call them hair rollers. You sleep in them, or sit under a dryer, then take them out. The word is simply curl plus -er, the ending for a tool that does a job. Though actually the same spelling is used for a person who plays the ice sport curling — that is a different meaning, filed elsewhere. Here it is the hair tool, a bathroom-and-salon word, not a formal one.
