Picture a round thing on the ground turning over and over, carrying itself forward by that very turning. That single image — a ball, a wheel, a log turning on its own axis and so moving along — is the seed of almost every meaning of 'roll', whether it's the motion itself, the moving-along it produces, the tube-shape made by curling something round, a long rumble, or a slow side-to-side rock.
