Hold one picture and everything else follows: a very heavy machine with a huge roller on the front, moving over a road at walking speed. It never swerves and it never hurries. Whatever is under it does not get argued with — it gets flat. That is the whole word. Put the machine on a person and you get someone nobody can stop; put it on a meeting and you get a plan that is through before the questions start; put it on a match and you get a score with only one side in it.

From the word’s history

steam + roller: a roller driven by steam. The engines changed, the name stayed.

steam(蒸汽)+ roller(滾輪),也就是靠蒸汽推動的滾筒機器。

Two branches

noun · B2

A heavy road vehicle with very wide, heavy rollers instead of ordinary wheels, driven slowly over a new road surface to press it flat and hard.

To make something happen by using all your power and influence, so that the people who object cannot stop it; also, to beat opponents so completely that they never get going.
