- 1
A cylinder is a solid or hollow shape like a tube or a can — it has two flat, round ends and straight sides. Tin cans, some water bottles, and are all cylinder-shaped. In cars, 'cylinders' are the tube-shaped parts inside the engine where fuel burns to make the car move — that's why you'll hear about 'a four-cylinder engine' or 'a six-cylinder engine,' meaning the engine has that many of these parts.
