You can think of 'proud' as a feeling that lifts you up — your chest rises, your head goes high, because of something good (what you did, what you have, who you belong to). That same 'raised-up' picture turns warm and healthy when it's earned, but can tip over into looking down on others when it goes too far; and a thing that stands tall and grand can look 'proud' too.
