When a building, a mountain, or a person is imposing, they look large and important, and they make you feel a little small just by being there. It is not only size. An imposing house looks as if it matters; an imposing man or woman takes up the room with their height, their quiet, or their manner. News writers and teachers like this word for palaces, old banks, statues, and serious people in dark coats. It is not a mean word, and it is not a warm one either: the person may be kind, but the feeling is still “this looks grand.” Though actually, people stretch it a little — a very fancy cake can be imposing if it looks almost too grand to cut. In every case the idea is the same: it presses on your notice.
