Pride is the warm, lifted feeling you get when you — or someone close to you — have done something well: head up, chest a little fuller. Hold that feeling. Point it at yourself in a healthy way and it becomes self-respect; let it swell too far and it becomes looking down on others; point it at a thing or person and they become 'your pride and joy', the thing you most want shown off. (One sense, a group of lions, rides in on a different, older route and only shares the spelling.)
