A self-respecting person has respect for themselves — their abilities and their beliefs — and will not cheapen that. In real use, though, the word is far more often a set pattern: “no self-respecting teacher / cook / fan would…” It means a person who takes that role seriously would never do that thing. We use it to , to joke, or to draw a line, not as a calm character note. Though actually, calling someone self-respecting on its own, with no “no… would…”, can sound a little old-fashioned, like a newspaper. The feeling is approval of standards, not of pride.
