If someone is conceited, they think they are very clever, , or beautiful — more so than other people think is fair — and it shows. It is always a critic’s word; you do not say it as a compliment. The older noun conceit first meant “a thought” or “an idea,” from , “to form an idea in the mind.” Later it came to mean “a too-proud idea of yourself,” and conceited is the adjective from that. Though actually, being proud of good work is not automatically conceited. The sting in this word is the gap between the person’s self-picture and what other people think is fair, plus a toward others. Younger speakers may just say full of themselves, arrogant, or stuck-up. Conceited can sound a little old-fashioned, but it is still clear and sharp.
組成conceit + -ed. Conceit comes from Middle English conceyte, from the verb related to Old French concevoir and Latin concipiō (“to take in, to form an idea”). English -ed makes the adjective.
