核心畫面

Picture anything built in layers, with a position marked somewhere up the stack: floors in a building, ranks in an office, numbers on a scale, in a game. High-level puts the mark near the top. What changes from sentence to sentence is only which stack you are standing in — and one useful side effect of standing high is that you see the outline of everything and none of the small parts.

From the word’s history

Wiktionary gives the formation plainly: high + level. Level carries the idea of a layer or a height, and high places you near the top of it.

Wiktionary 記的組成很直白:high 加 level。level 本身帶著「一層」或「高度」的概念,high 則把你的位置放在那一疊的上面。這也說明了為什麼同一個字可以講樓層、職級、數值和遊戲等級——換的只是那一疊是什麼。

Five branches

在階梯上站得高:地位與等級

這一支的「層」是人爬上去的位置。公司和政府有職級,遊戲有等級,兩邊都是一格一格往上算,所以同一個字兩邊都能用。

adjective · B2

Held by, or involving, people who sit near the top of a government or an organisation and have real power to decide things.

高層的

量表上的刻度很高

這一支的「層」不是人的位置,是量出來的數字。指針停在上面,就是 high-level。

adjective · B2

Reaching a high degree or strength of something that can be measured, such as noise, radiation, or how strongly a germ resists a medicine.

程度很高的

離地面越遠:抽象與進階的那一層

一門學問也像一疊樓層:底下是基礎,越往上越專、越抽象。這一支講的就是停在上層的東西。

adjective · C1

Dealing with ideas that are advanced, technical and hard to follow — the kind you need training or long study to understand.

高深的

從高處往下看:只看得到輪廓

站得高不只是位置高,還會改變你看到什麼。這一支抓住的正是那個副作用:範圍變大,細節消失。

adjective · B2

Giving only the general shape of something — the main points, with almost all of the detail left out.

概略的

真的在高的地方

這是整個字最貼字面的用法:那一疊是真的樓層或真的高度。上面幾支都可以想成從這個畫面延伸出去的。

adjective · B2

Placed or happening high up — at a greater height than the other parts of the same place or thing.

高處的
