Hearing is hear with -ing on it: the whole business of sound reaching a person's ears. Sometimes the word names the ability itself, sometimes the circle of space in which a sound still reaches someone, and sometimes an arranged occasion whose whole point is that a person gets heard.

Wiktionary records hearing as Middle English herynge, that is hear + -ing. The word begins as nothing more than the -ing form of hear, which is why every modern use is still a way of naming some side of the hearing of something.
